Tuna Tournament 2010

2010 Tuna Tourney Application

We will once again have our Tuna Tournament in conjunction with:

The Stoddard Tournament held at the BYC.

We have decided to officially call the tournament the:

 “BYC Stoddard Invitational Fishing Tournament”

and Maddie's Anglers will be a sponsor of the event and contribute a portion of the entrance fees to the charity. The details of the tournament are as follows:

Date: Saturday September 11, 2010

The Boston Yacht Club is hosting its annual fishing tournament Sunday September 11th. The tournament will include three prize categories; Largest Striped Bass, Largest Bluefish and Tagged/Retained Tuna. The tournament entrance fee is $25 per angler for the Bass and Blues tournament. An additional entrance fee of $5 per angler will enter one into the Tuna tournament. The tournament is open to Maddie's Anglers and BYC members. All anglers entered in the tournament will receive a T-shirt and be eligible for the prizes in the categories below:

Fishing will commence at sunrise on Saturday and weigh-in will be at 3PM at the BYC. Food and drink will be available at the BYC Gazebo (at the head of the BYC gangway). We anticipate boats entered in the tournament to be docking up from 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM. (in a similar fashion to last year). The larger boats will be stern to on the main dock and we are asking center consoles to try to fill in at the yardarm dock (the next dock down harbor from the gas dock). The fuel dock will be open during the afternoon.

Prizes and Categories:

TUNA:

Tuna determined by lottery. Each released/tagged or retained tuna (NMFS permit required all NMFS rules apply) entitles an angler to a lottery ticket to be drawn by the tournament committee. There will be three (3) Prizes in the Tuna category:

Everyone needs to get their own tags for the tuna tournament. If you need tags all you need to do is send an email to; tagging@noaa.gov with the following message;

"I am participating in the ATLANTIC TUNA PROJECT and would like to request (# of tags you want here) tags for the upcoming season. Please send the tags to: (include your mailing address)"

It can take 2-3 weeks to get the tags so now is the time to send the email and please limit your initial tags to 5. We will do a short demonstration on tagging at the Captains Meeting.

The name of the winning boat that goes on the Maddies plaque will be for the Largest Giant caught or in the case where this is not obvious – it will go to the team with the Most Tags/Retained Fish

Bass and Bluefish:

Special Rules:

There will be a Captains Meeting on Thursday, September 9th at Maddies Topside at 7PM.

2010 Vineyard Tourney Winner's

2010 Maddie's Vineyard Tourney Winners, Brian Willett & Greg Veprek  The fish was caught at spot # 5 on the chunking side. Bass fishing was tough. Make no mistake, this was a pull a fish out of your #%@, one. We were following everyone else, when we threw our hands up, and said screw it, let's go chunk in tight, and try to pull one out that was feeding on crabs and lobsters dislodged during the rough weather, and sure enough.......

We had a fantastic weekend on the Vineyard and a good showing with well over 50 people participating in the tournament. As usual the social activities far outweighed the fishing and it was great to see so many people enjoying the afternoons and exchanging stories and cocktails on all the boats. Congratulations to our repeat champion - Greg Veprek and crew  Brian Willet who landed a nice 37 pound bass with the help of his crew. The results are as follows:

Overall points
1 point per pound of bass, 2 points per pound of Blue, and 4 points per pound of fluke

Kerald: 64 points
Double Header: 52 points
Lizzy T: 50 points

Largest Fish per Category:

Striper: Kerald 37 lbs
Bluefish: Double Header 7.5 lbs
Fluke: Double Header 5 lbs
